The RNC601 is an RNAV computer manufactured by Foster Airdata Systems. This RNAV computer would have been considered a state-of-the-art piece of avionics back in the day, allowing for more direct navigation paths and detailed flight planning. It has the ability to store and recall flight plan information, waypoints, and more. This unit is a "classic" VOR/DME type RNAV system and would be considered extremely out of date by today's standards. Based on markings from the integrated circuits, we would estimate this unit to have been manufactured sometime in the early 80s. It was obtained from a decommissioned KingAir aircraft. We were unable to find much information online about this unit such as manuals or documentation. Below are some images of the exterior, front panel, and internal components. With some trial-and-error, we determined which pins were needed to power the unit and successfully got it running. Supplying +28V DC to pin 1 of the DA-15 connector and using pin 9 of the DA-15 connector as common (ground) resulted in the system powering up (when switched on). Supplying +28V DC to pin 2 of the DA-15 connector will illuminate the integrity lights (backlight) of the front panel. Since we don't have the full pinout, we are unsure if these are the recommended connections. We only chose them for testing purposes after performing a quick reverse-engineering and analysis of the power supply and backlight sections. It was interesting to cycle through the menus, saved waypoints, flight plans, and more. It seems that while this unit would have been used in conjunction with other avionics, most of the user-programmable data is stored internally on the RNC601.
