The Bendix DA-1203A is a radar system assembly that includes the antenna drive (4000504-0301) and the actual antenna array (4000525-1212). It is intended to be used with the Bendix RT-131A data transmitter processor as part of their aircraft weather radar system. The processor/RF exciter provides X-band pulses at 100 Hz with a 3.5 microsecond pulse width, and an 8 kw peak power output. A flat radar array is coupled to a dual-axis antenna drive that can steer the array in two directions (pitch and roll). It uses a DC stepper motor and a DC torque motor to adjust the position and has two resolvers (one for each axis) that are used to report the position back to the control system. There is some basic circuitry contained within the antenna drive, but it is designed to be connected to the radar controller. The antenna drive has a waveguide connection that couples the magnetron or exciter to the movable antenna array. We removed some plastic covers to expose the motors and resolvers. We also opted to remove the primitive control card that was used to drive the motors. Instead, we connected an Arduino motor shield to the DC torque motor and a Microstep driver to the stepper motor and completely rewired the unit. With a simple control program, we can actuate the motors and steer the array in both axes using a serial connection to an Arduino. Since we don't have the radar controller with the magnetron, it's just going to be an interactive display piece. Also, we have left the resolvers unconnected at this point, but it would be nice to eventually get them connected so the control program can determine the position of the array.
